What is “Baba Marta”?

It is a very interesting Bulgarian holiday and I want to explain it.

This holiday called  is”Baba Marta“. In English, this means – old lady Marta. The Bulgarian name for the month of March is Mart because the old lady’s name is Marta. She is like Santa but brings martenitsa. There is different stories to Baba Marta and her symbols but I will describe them shortly.

What is martenitsa?
On first of March, the Bulgarians tie on their hands or on the clothes, knitted from white and red wool yarn amulets. This called is martenitsa. The wool yarn is a symbol of work and prosperity. The red color symbolizes the love and life. The white color is a symbol of the wisdom and peace. The Bulgarians belive that martenitsa brings health and luck, and that is good sign before spring.
When the Spring comes, the people tie martenitsa on a fruit tree in bloom.
